Likely bought as a souvenir when visiting Japan; a fabulous Damascene pendant dating to the mid 20th century. Damascene is the inlay of 24 carat gold and silver into a darkly oxidised steel background, a traditional art originally used to decorate samurai swords and ceremonial articles. Beautifully decorated with a different finely executed design of flowers, pagodas, bamboo and butterflies. On a gilded base metal chain which measures 22 inches, in excellent vintage condition. The centrepiece measures one inch wide.
